how time flies...

it's been a year, but we still miss you.
Sedona, the best dog ever.
Because she was the first.

a very big thank you...

to all who commented and expressed your sympathies
to us on Sedona's passing.
her loss has definitely left a bigger hole in our lives than we ever imagined possible, and we know it will take a long time to come to terms with the grief.
Bisbee is definitely a bit confused, too... Sedona was always the leader, and Bisbee went along with all her games (and getting into trouble. too!) Bisbee will have some adjusting to do, as will we-- Ariel has been great, though, giving her some animal companionship (and someone to chase!)

random wrapup

the camera had so many pictures on it that the memory card was almost full, so I had to do some photo editing and organizing. So, here are a few random photos to start off the weekend... Butters and Tom relaxing on the couch in the evening. Now that it's chillier outside, the cats are a bit friendlier and enjoy snuggling, something they wouldn't do during the summer.

The perfect cigar ash... you know it's a good cigar when the ashes hold together this well! The late afternoons are cool enough now to relax on the patio, finally. We don't often have time to do it, unfortunately.

Playing puppies-- they look so vicious, don't they?? Every once in a while someone yips like they're actually hurt, but I think all that fur is a good insulator to avoid injury. I'm so glad that Sedona and Bisbee can keep each other entertained! (although we still do plenty of playing with their toys, too...)
A beautiful pink and peach sunset reflected in my side mirror a few weeks ago... the skies here turn such amazing colors sometimes, it's almost unbelievable.
A photo from over the summer at Tom's family reunion-- one of the traditions is enjoying (I say that loosely!) limburger cheese. In this picture, Tom's grandma and his dad's cousin Ron are offering us some. I did try it last year, and it was better than I thought it would be (this year, not so much... this time, I couldn't get past the smell). Have a good weekend, and stay tuned for more randomness coming soon!

our latest backyard visitor- or, Sedona thinks she is a bird dog.

Sedona doesn't know anything about sheep, but she does seem to be a bird dog! She always tries to get the hummingbirds when they come to the feeder, and this particular day, she really had it in for this visitor to the backyard... I don't get it; the birds don't do anything to her, but they really bother her! (maybe she's trying to herd them??)
This guy posed quite nicely for me, even with all of Sedona's barking and jumping around; he even waited while I went back into the house to get the camera. I think it is a Eurasian dove, which is quite a bit larger than a Mourning Dove. I haven't seen him since; I guess Sedona wasn't a very nice hostess!

random photo catchup

a few random photos from a few weeks ago... the planned studio clean-up and painting-fest was interrupted today by some technical difficulties- did you know that an underwire from a brassiere can get into the water pump in your washer and cause all sorts of havoc, not to mention some horrible, God-awful noises?!? Neither did I, till today! (they're uncomfortable to wear, and turns out they're dangerous, too!) Luckily (after cleaning up the water left in the washer, that is) Tom managed to remove the wire, and the washer seems to be working correctly for the moment. In the meantime, take a look at these! Sedona and Bisbee, taking in the sun in the backyard. (Bisbee is on the left- she's not quite as big as Sedona, but will have a much fuller coat, I think.) It's been in the upper 80s here recently, but now is back down into the low-mid 70s, where it's supposed to be for this time of year; they do enjoy relaxing in the sun, but very soon want to come back into the house where we are.
Butters and I, doing some internet surfing. She's turned out to be somewhat of a lap cat, now that she's a little older and settling down. It's kind of difficult to operate the mouse when she's laying on my arm. though!
This is the inside of a barbecue restaurant in Albequerque, New Mexico. Tom flew into/out of here last month when he visited a customer site in Sante Fe, and stopped here for brisket and all the fixin's on the way back to the airport. We found this place on our very first trip together, and have always wanted to go back. (I tried to talk him into bringing some home for me, but he didn't think he could get it onto the plane). By the way, our very first trip together was flying out here to Phoenix and driving back to Illinois in a U-Haul truck with some of his belongings, when he was moving back to Illinois- as my friend Karen said, "you will certainly get to know someone when you're in a truck together for two days straight; it's a good way to find out if you caqn get along together." She was right, and it seemed to work out okay, since we just celebrated our 5-year anniversary last week!
here's a look at the outdoor sign at Rudy's, just off of I-40 in Albequerque, NM- I love the retro look of the sign, and highly recommend their barbeque to anyone who's traveling that way! (of course, I'm going to have to wait a while till I can eat there again... but, hopefully we can head to New Mexico this fall for the hot air balloon festival.)

weekend entertainment in pictures...

It was a typical weekend around here... a little laundry, some television, snacks, the usual. This pic is of my latest flea market finds. Saturday morning, I got up early (6 am!!) and headed out to a flea market at one of the Valley's antique malls- the dealers were set up in the parking lot of the Merchant Square antique mall. It was pretty nice, to be "flea-ing" again; Arizona's flea markets don't compare to the ones back in the Midwest (I have actually thought about traveling back home to visit a couple flea markets: Elkhorn, WI and Sandwich, IL are two of my favorites!), but this one was okay. The entire stack of sheet music was $1; no idea what I'll do with it all, but I just love the square dancing couple on the front of that folk music book! The vintage novel is from the 1930s, and is by an author that I happen to collect- a great find for $3!! (the stories remind me of Phyllis Whitney: mystery/romance novels, set against a backdrop of country estates in the Northeast.) The small flowers are felt decorations on handmade bridge tallies; I have no idea what I'll do with them either, but I had to have them. And, the giant protractor is a teaching aid, I think, and for no purpose at all- just because it was fun!! (for $1, I couldn't pass it up!!) I didn't have time to go through the antique mall itself, so I will definitely have to go back.
I had to take a photograph of this... for a few brief minutes, Arizona was winning the SuperBowl! It was a sad loss...
...but at least the snacks were good! Homemade potato skins, and chili-cheese nachos (with extra jalapenos, of course!!)
...this is a very rare photo of the elusive, endangered, Southwestern Shel-ephant... (only seen in the desert during laundry season.) We had some fun at Sedona's expense while folding the laundry... our dogs are so patient! (sometimes, anyway!!)

random photos from the past week or so

fun mail earlier this week from my sister Jackie... Our Lady of Guadalupe dishtowel, embroidered on a flour sack towel by my Mom... cool embroidery pattern by Sublime Stitching!
The planet Venus, taken by Tom with our regular digital camera. Taken earlier today thru the telescope in our backyard. Venus has been extraordinarily bright the last few weeks in the early evening and into the night, but it's actually so bright that it can be seen during the day, too... pretty cool, considering Venus is actually 25 million miles away when it's closest to Earth!!
Bisbee's newest trick, "Shake." It's hard to believe she's going to be a year old next month!!
Sedona and Bisbee, actually sharing the chair for a few moments. This is a rare occurrence, since usually when they get close to each other, they end up wrestling and chasing each other thru the house.

thankful 2008

okay, so this is a Thanksgiving weekend post, not a Thanksgiving Day post, but I'm still just as thankful...

for my family- for my Thomas (I can't put it into words without sounding sappy, so I won't even try); for the furry companions we share our lives with, both canine and feline; for my family members all across the midwest (even though we don't get together very often any more); for my friends, both new and old... companionship of all sorts makes this journey through life sooo much more interesting!

(Bisbee is sacked out on the couch next to Tom... she's the funniest dog ever!) Sedona, patiently waiting for me to take her picture, so she could get up... I never knew I was a "dog person" before we got her; I'd only ever thought I was a cat person, but dogs are so much more sociable than cats... one's not better than the other, it's just different. Plus it's just a riot, watching Sedona and Bisbee play together (there's no way I could get pictures of that, though, so you'll just have to trust that it's hilarious)!
I'm thankful that we have a comfortable home, decent jobs, medical benefits, and the means to have the things we like in order to to be comfortable... (this is the "Before" picture of our Thanksgiving Day spread, which included roast duck, a wonderful bottle of Shiraz wine, sweet potato casserole, a relish tray, and homemade bread). I'm also thankful we live in such a beautiful (although seemingly inhospitable) part of the country, and that I have a chance to see Nature's majesty every day when I drive through the desert.

I'm thankful that I have a creative personality, and an outlet for all the ideas that float around in my head... every once in a while I talk to people who have pursuits that aren't creative/artistic at all, and they give me a weird look when I tell them that I like to spend my time painting, cutting, and pasting. I can't imagine NOT being like this!!

(I'm also thankful that both our employers gave us a 4-day weekend, and that we don't have to get up early tomorrow!)

another weekend ends...

Another weekend ends in the desert, and like all of them, it didn't seem long enough. Yesterday I ran some errands in town, we had a fire in the chiminea, and we cooked dinner out on the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, and a couple portobello mushroom caps with garlic and mozzarella cheese). It was nice to relax on the patio with a fire crackling; this past winter was too cold to be outside much, so we didn't have fires very often. There's just something so relaxing about the aroma of pinon pine and mesquite! Tom got the telescope out early Saturday morning, too (like 5:30 am!!)... Jupiter and Venus are now rising early in the morning, so he spent some time watching Jupiter before the sun came up. Today was quite a bit colder (about 60 degrees today, when it was in the 70s yesterday); we got our favorite Filiberto's breakfast burritos, watched the race, and I did some crafting, which I will show you tomorrow (or you can check out my Flickr page). The prickly pear cacti in the front yard are growing by leaps and bounds; the pads are flattening out, and the spines are beginning to appear.

Sedona and Butters spent some of Saturday afternoon relaxing on the couch together. I am so glad these cats get along with the dog... Phoebe and Cleo never got used to Sedona, and I feel they lost out on the last couple years of their lives because of this...

Pandora in the bedroom window, checking out the action in the backyard... Pandora and Butters have gone out into the yard a couple times (only because of the cement-block wall), and they actually like it out there... we have to watch carefully, or they can sneak right past us when we come in the house!

a few pics, hopefully...

Yay, it worked! Sedona went to the groomer's Saturday, for a long-overdue "Bath, Brush, and Tidy" and this is the result. She cleans up nicely, doesn't she?? Amazingly enough, her third birthday is next month... hard to believe it's been that long! (sometime in the next few years, hopefully she will start to calm down at least a little!) This is her newest trick... she isn't exactly patient, but she can do it. (unless the treat starts to slide... then, all bets are off) This picture is for you, Mom. This is the red yucca in our front yard; these are the seeds you have. I finally cut last year's flower scape off a couple months ago, and this one started blooming a couple months ago... it should last for at least another six months. These are a couple in-process projects- above is a two-page spread from a board book I bought at the thrift store... so far, I've gessoed the pages, and startd painting the backgrounds. I have no idea what I'll use it for, yet... a two-page spread I started working on in the composition book... painting, stamping with foam stamps and the lid off a soda bottle, glitter glue, and white pen, so far... no plans for this spread yet, either, but it was fun to do. Perhaps a border of some sort...

kitten update

well, it's been a week now, and so far, everyone has survived. The kitties are settling in, and Cleo and Sedona are adjusting (as much as can be expected, anyway). I have learned a couple things, though, including "Never hold a kitten over a dog's head, especially when the dog can jump." I was being helpful (so I thought) and was going to carry the yellow kitten to the laundry room (where their food bowls are), but Sedona really wanted to get her. So, the dog started jumping, the kitten started spitting and growling, and I got my hands scratched and bitten for my stupidity. It all turned out okay in the end, and my hands are fine- one of the kitten's teeth broke off (in my hand), she bit me so hard- a baby tooth, I think. Cleo doesn't really know what to think of them yet, except she doesn't really like the intrusion- actually, the kittens being here has made her come out of her shell (and her hiding place in the bathroom) a bit more... she occasionally comes into our bathroom, or up on our bed, to voice her displeasure. I am definitely glad we got both kittens, so they can keep each other entertained, and leave her alone for the most part. This is the yellow kitten, all puffed up and mean-looking (the dog was right there, I think). She is definitely the more timid of the two (except when threatened- see story above!), and is a bit more reserved than her sister. We named her Butters, after a character on the Comedy Central television cartoon South Park... you'd have to watch the show to really get it, but his nickname is a play on words (Butters Stotch is his full name), and somehow, she just reminds us of him. (I put a pic of Butters from South Park below) Just something in her expression, I think...

The other kitten's name is Pandora (Tom thought that one up on the way to the vet's office), because she is a trouble-maker!! She tries to sneak out of the laundry room the minute you crack open the door, and she gets into everything!! (Right now we're keeping them in the laundry room, while they recover from getting declawed, and till the dog gets used to them... We let them out for periods of time while we can supervise, and we also give the dog a time-out in her crate once or twice a day, so the kittens can explore.) Below is a pic of Pandora hanging out under the piano, from this morning when they were playing... hopefully her tendency to chew on everything is just because they're at that "baby teeth falling out" stage??

Butters, waiting to pounce, as soon as Pandora gets close enough... they have such focus!

Action shot! I know it's not the best pic, but they're really quick! They don't seem to feel too bad from their declawing, but we are keeping them in the laundry room to keep them quieter (they wouldn't settle down out here, at all), and the vet sent home some liquid pain medication.. boy, administering that is fun, let me tell you! (it takes a team effort, with Tom keeping the kitten wrapped in a towel, so I can shoot the medicine into their mouth... I'll be glad when we're done with it, and I'm sure they will be, too! (There's a few more pictures of them on my Flickr page...)
